$1.6 Billion invested in Indian Startups in around 300 deals in 2013

2013 has been a year full of activity for the Indian startup ecosystem. A wave of optimism surging through a pool of pessimism, there has always been something to cheer about. 2012 saw more than $760 million being invested via more than 200 deals and the number has risen in 2013 to over a $1.6 Billion via 293 deals. This compilation covers (almost) all the investments that have been made public in the VC and Angel space over the year. All the startup acquisitions have been covered in a previous post here.

According to investment size

Out of all the disclosed fundings , we’ve made four broad categories for the funding size:
A: < $1 million (Angel/Seed Funding)
B: > $1 million and < $5 million (Seed fund/Series A)
C: >= $5 million and <$10 million (Series A/Series B)
D: >=10 million (Series C and beyond)

According to location

Location is always an interesting parameter and in 2013, South India won the show with 43% of all the deals. No prizes for guessing the biggest contributor: Bangalore. The Silicon Valley of India saw 81 deals followed by Chennai and Hyderabad within South India. The second most dense area in terms of investments has been the west with 29% of the deals. Mumbai is the clear winner here with 55 of all the deals. North India came in third with 57 deals.

According to sector

Sectorwise, Consumer Web leads the show in terms of number of deals with 49 but in terms of the amount, eCommerce is the highest owing to the outliers Flipkart ($360 million) and Snapdeal ($125 million). Total amount invested (and disclosed) in Consumer Web stands at $187 million with Zomato as the biggest winner and eCommerce as a whole stands at 44 deals worth $880 million.
